After over twelve years of using rental platforms as both a host and a guest around the world, I’ve gained a deep understanding of how both parties can best benefit from short- to medium-term stays.
My experiences, combined with two decades of consumer research in media, led me to create Casa Co: a members-based network connecting real homes and people.
While the times I enjoyed as a guest, and the financial benefit of being a host made it undoubtedly worthwhile for me, I could appreciate why many people were reluctant to list their own homes.
It was usually one of two reasons
The idea of having anonymous and unvetted ‘strangers’ living in their home made them feel uncomfortable.
The hassle of emptying their entire home of personal possessions to make it ‘rental ready’ simply wasn’t worth it.
Through my travels, I realized something: the most authentic stays were the ones where I stepped into a home that felt lived in. The ones where hosts didn’t feel the need to strip their homes of personal touches—where the pantry still had essentials like herbs and oil, and the energy felt genuine. That’s what was missing from the typical rental experience.
I realized that rather than a temporary home being sterile, soul-less and commercialized, it should offer comfort and charm. It’s about enjoying the everyday; a home away from home.
